How To Care For Your Flowers

Start with a clean vessel

Use vinegar or lemon juice to cut through detergent buildup in your vase.  Rinse thoroughly and add fresh, cool water.

Cut your stems

Using sharp pruners, cut the flower stems on a 45 degree angle to allow for maximum hydration.

Keep foliage out of the water

Strip any leaves from the stems that will be submerged in water.

Feed them

Flower Food can extend the life of your flowers.  It contains three main ingredients:

  • A carbohydrate, which is a sugar, that helps buds to bloom and open.
  • A citric acid, which acidifies the water. Bacteria can’t grow as quickly or as easily.
  • A biocide, which helps limit bacteria growth.

Follow this DIY recipe below using some basic household ingredients.  It's a quick and easy recipe recommended from the Real Flower Co. based in the UK:

  • 1 pint water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vinegar
  • 1-2 drops of bleach

Add all the ingredients to your vase and give them a stir.

*For health and safety reasons, please do not exceed these recommended amounts, and do not create in bulk*

Keep out of direct sunlight

Ambient or diffuse lighting is fine, but keep a good distance from a window that gets harsh direct light.  The water can warm causing an increase in bacterial growth.

Keep a good distance from ripening fruit

As fruit ripens, emitting ethylene gas, it can cause the flowers to decline before their time.

Change the water often and repeat the steps listed above

To keep your flowers giving their best, it's necessary to provide fresh water often.  Start from the beginning of this page and repeat the steps again.

Enjoy Your Flowers!
